1. RITA prepared my return and I received a bill and I have no idea what the bill is for or why I owe any amount.  Who should I call and what information does RITA need to review my account?

Before you contact RITA please have your social security number(s), W-2's, and other tax documents on hand. In the event RITA prepared your return, a copy will be made available to you.  Please provide the RITA representative ample time to review your tax information. In future filing years, please consider filing electronically using E-File. If you E-File, you will be able to see what you owe immediately.

  1. If an adjustment is made to my return, will RITA notify me in writing of this adjustment?

Yes, if RITA discovers an error on your return and makes a change to the tax amount due, you will receive notification. The letter will contain the corrected liability and an explanation as to why the change was made. However, you will not receive any notification except a bill if your estimated payments are misreported on line 13.

  1. I received an estimated billing statement.  What is this?

The tax codes of RITA municipalities require the quarterly payments of current year estimated tax if you anticipate owing income tax in excess of the credit allowed for the tax withheld by your employer(s). Payment is not voluntary, but is required by law and due by the date indicated. Failure to pay may subject you to penalty and interest.

  1. The estimate on my bill is incorrect because my employer is now withholding residence tax.  How can I change my estimate and what will happen if my amended estimate is incorrect?

At the bottom left hand corner on the back of your billing statement there is a place to amend your estimate.  If your estimated payments are not 90% of the tax due may be subject to penalty and interest assessment.

  1. Why do I have an asterisk next to one of the tax years on my bill?

This means that your account contains additional liabilities that are being billed separately because of a payment plan or a legal action.

  1. I am on a payment plan; will I receive a separate billing statement?

Yes, you will receive a monthly billing statement for the tax years that are on the payment plan. You will also receive a bill quarterly for your current year estimate and any additional liabilities that are not included on the payment plan.
