Telephone Scam Notice

Posted On: Thursday, November 13, 2014

Scam artists have recently turned their attention on taxpayers.  Citizens have received fraudulent calls that are angry and threatening from individuals who are claiming to be from the IRS and who are demanding immediate payment of overdue taxes.  The IRS is warning taxpayers of these telephone scams and providing information on what to do if you receive such a call.   The IRS news release can be found at the following link.

Like the IRS, your first contact from RITA about a tax matter will be by official correspondence sent to you in the U.S. mail, not by a telephone call nor by email, text messaging or social media.  If you receive an unsolicited communication by telephone, text, email or social media from someone claiming to be from RITA, end the communication and place a call to our Customer Service Department at 1.800.860.7482.  One of our agents will assist you with all municipal income tax matters.

If you believe you have been targeted by a telephone scam you should make a report to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov, under “FTC Complaint Assistance” and to the Ohio Attorney General at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800.282.0515.  In addition, if the telephone scam involves an individual claiming to be from RITA, please also report this to the Agency’s Operations Help Desk at 1.800.860.7482 x5010. Together we can stop these criminals from preying on unsuspecting taxpayers.
